Key Info
  • Wallace's Death
  • Duration: 03:09
  • Wallace and his men were overwhelmed by Edward II's archers at the Battle of Falkirk. Thousands of Scots were slaughtered. Wallace escaped but was hunted down as an outlaw. Popular belief is that Wallace was betrayed by a fellow Scot before being taken to London for trial and execution. Many of the details behind this are based on a poem by the minstrel Blind Harry, but the accuracy of this is questionable. This clip has subtitles available in Flash.

Ideas for use in class
  • In the classroom, this clip could be used to discuss the reliability of historical evidence. The evidence that we have relating to Wallace’s capture and death all has a bias depending on who has written it. Students could write newspaper articles from both the Scottish and English perspectives about William Wallace.
