Ideas for use in class
  • The phrase "golden ovum" is used by Sue Perkins to describe an egg 0:55 and some teachers might feel this is less appropriate for their class. This would be a good introduction to the Home Front in World War Two. Pupils will enjoy this light-hearted presentation of the limits rationing placed on the home economy. Pupils could be asked to recall what foods were rationed and which did not have restrictions. They might be asked to recall other ways in which people's lives were influenced by the Ministry of Food, giving scope for discussion of the role of propaganda. Pupils might be able to refer to other resources in conjunction with this to prepare a weekly menu based on the quantities of food available in World War Two. They might also be asked to prepare their own propaganda materials to urge wartime austerity. Could be used in conjunction with clips 14250 and 14252 This could link into PSHE with the potential to evaluate the nutritional value of the ration and the improvement of diet during the war. Prudent use of food and the avoidance of waste could be discussed in the context of environmental awareness and the stewardship of resources. Older pupils might be challenged to consider the social impact of these changes. Could be used in conjunction with clip 12619 Pupils might want to research non-domestic roles of women during the Second World War using clip #7620
