  • Duration: 02:46
  • Andrew Marr tells the story of Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip's romance, marriage and early family life together. The couple's first meaningful meeting was in 1939, when the Royal family visited the Royal Naval College in Dartmouth. Elizabeth was just thirteen at the time and Prince Philip was beginning his British naval career after his family had been exiled from Greece. Their engagement was officially announced in July 1947 and the marriage took place in Westminster Abbey on 20 November the same year. It was a huge public occasion, providing some much-needed colour and excitement in the austere post-war period. Two thousand guests were invited and 200 million people around the world listened to the ceremony.
