Obtaining copper from ore
Mark Miodownik is seen on location in the Timna Valley in Israel where the earliest known copper mines are found. Mark shows copper ore and how it was first heated in open fires to purify it. He describes this as the moment man left the Stone Age and entered the age of metals. First broadcast in the Learning Zone on BBC2 in May 2012 as part of the programme Materials: How They Work.
