  • Dr Yan from the BBC One series 'Bang Goes The Theory' explains how sound waves are generated by vibrations, using a violin to demonstrate. He explains how sound waves hitting other objects can cause them to vibrate. He then uses a microphone, amplifier and loudspeaker to direct and amplify a note from his violin onto a wine glass. At higher frequencies, the glass vibrates more and he uses this to explain resonance. After measuring the resonance frequency of the glass, he matches this using his violin and causes the glass to shatter. First broadcast on BBC One on 'Bang Goes The Theory'.

Ideas for use in class
  • To illustrate the phenomenon of resonance and to prove that music really can shatter glass. Students could then research how engineers avoid resonance in large structures to prevent damage by natural sources of vibration. 13029 of this sequence shows a lower frequency sound from a double bass being used to shatter a flat pane of glass. This clip accompanies a BBC Teachers' Pack to support Series 3 and 4 of 'Bang Goes The Theory'. The pack can be downloaded from bbc.co.uk/schools/teachers/bang/
