Fold mountain formation
Professor Iain Stewart demonstrates a Victorian model which uses layers of different coloured sand to show how fold mountains were formed in Scotland. As the model exerts horizontal pressure, the sand clearly shows folded layers building vertically.
Use as part of a course on plate tectonics to illustrate mountain building.
In the classroom this could also be demonstrated by using different-coloured modelling clay arranged in layers , then both ends pushed gently towards each other.
