Suri men prepare for a stick fight
A group of Suri tribesmen gather in preparation for a traditional Suri donga or stick-fighting competition. They drink a purifying potion in the hope that it will cleanse their bodies of impurities and make them strong. Following the cleansing ritual, they sing songs together as a sign of their solidarity. This clip was first published as part of the BBC Tribe website: bbc.co.uk/tribe/index.shtml. Please note this clip is only available in Flash.
Useful in the context of a unit on cultural understanding and diversity or a study of people and their environment. Ask your learners to consider the reasons why the tribesmen are so keen to perform well in the stick fight.
