Tom here from BBC Learning English, and... I would rather be in bed today than be in the office.

We use ‘would rather’ plus a verb to say what we would, ideally, prefer to do.

We can also use ‘than’ to introduce a contrasting idea.

For example, I would rather drink tea than drink coffee.

And, I would rather watch TV than do my homework.

Function / वापर

एखाद्या परि ‘would rather’ to say what we would like in a particular situation. When using ‘would rather’, we often introduce two or more ideas to show contrast. We use ‘than’ (or ‘rather than’) to introduce the contrasting ideas.

I would rather drink juice than drink water.
I would rather listen to music than watch TV.

Structure / रचना

Positive form: सकारात्मक

would rather + verb
‘Would’ is often contracted to I’d, you’d, he’d , she’d, we’d and they’d.

I would rather stay in bed than go for a run in the morning
He’d rather sit in front of the TV than go for a run!

Negative form: नकारात्मक

The negative form of ‘would rather’ is ‘rather not’. This is not used as much as the positive form. We don’t introduce contrasting ideas when using negative forms.

I’d rather not visit your family this weekend.

We can also use ‘would rather not’ as a short answer.

A: Would you like to come swimming?
B: No thanks, I’d rather not.

Question form: प्रश्नार्थक

We change the word order to make a question. We use would you rather to offer a choice.

Would you rather go the café or the bar?
Would you rather live in America or live in Asia?

Extension

1. Would rather and would prefer have the same meaning.
However, after using would prefer, we need to add [to + verb].

I would rather drink tea than coffee.
I would prefer to drink tea than coffee.

2. We can use would rather to talk about what we want other people to do.

In this case, we use the past tense for the present situation:
Would rather + person+ past tense

I would rather you gave me the money now
I’d rather you left now
I’d rather you didn’t tell anyone
