News insert
An active male role in the early stages of babies’ development produced better performance in cognitive tests by the age of two, researchers found. They say the findings show the value of early paternal involvement. Previous studies found that men tended to have a more stimulating, vigorous style, encouraging a child’s risk-taking and exploration tendencies, which, in turn, might facilitate cognitive development.

Caalii
Egaa abbootiin daa’immansaanii waliin dabarsuuf yeroo qabaachuun guddina/ bilchina daa’immaniitiif ni garagaara. Haa ta’u malee, abbootiin yeroo hangamiif daa’immansaanii waliin dabarsu? Sam
Well, either way, it doesn’t seem like a lot of time to spend with your child. Surely a child should spend at least an hour a day with their fathers!

Phil
An hour?! Really? Have you ever spent time with children? It’s hard work!

Sam
If what the research says is true, fathers can help develop their child’s cognitive development just by spending time with them.

Caalii
‘Cognitive development’ jechuun guddina bilchina sammuu wayita ta’u damee barnootaa kan dandeettii waa yaaduufi waa hubachu daa’immaniirratti xiyyeeffateedha.

Phil
But surely, fathers spending time with their children isn’t the only thing that helps a child’s cognitive development. What about their mothers?

Caalii

Sam
Well of course, mothers have an important role to play, but the research shows that a father’s involvement, which is on the rise, has its own benefits.

Phil
Really? Paternal involvement is on the rise?

Caalii
Eeyee. ‘Paternal’ jechuu abbummaa; akkaataa qorannoon Yuniversitii Lamdaniifi Yuniversitii Seevilliyaa raga bahuutti abbootiin barawwan 1970wwan keessa turan guyyaatti daqiiqaa 5fqofa daa’immansaanii waliin dabarsu turan. Sam
Wow, paternal involvement is only 35 minutes a day? That makes me so sad.

Caalii
Kun fooyya’insa guddaadha, Saam. Bara 1970 irra dacha torbaan kan caaluudha!

Sam
Yes, but still, I don’t think it’s enough. The news report mentioned that paternal involvement helps a child be a risk-taker.

Caalii
‘A risk-taker’ jechuun kan ittigaafatammummaa fudhatu. Are you a risk-taker, Phil?

Phil
Sure, and I rarely spent time with my father growing up.

Sam
You’re not a risk-taker! And what about exploration tendency? The news report told us that paternal involvement helps with developing a child’s exploration tendency.

Caalii
‘Exploration tendency’ jechuun fedhii waaqoratanii biragahuu – amala waa qoruu fi barachuu yaaluuti.

Phil
Another false claim. I’m always exploring to learn new things by myself, and again, I didn’t spend much time with my father.

Sam
Stop lying to the audience, Phil!

Caalii
I think Sam has a point.

Phil
What do you mean? I’m always learning things by myself and solving all of my own problems.

Sam
No, you don’t. Whenever you come across a problem, the first thing you do is ask someone near you for an answer.

Phil
Yeah, and I actively look for answers!

Sam
Ugh, I give up.

Caalii
