News insert
A ten-year-old schoolgirl from Pakistan has been taking general rubbish and turning it into gift bags to help clean up the growing waste problem in her country. Pakistan generates 20m tonnes of rubbish a year and the figure is growing by 2.4% annually. Could Pakistan’s ‘youngest social entrepreneur’ have the answer? Zymal Umer estimates she has sold $5,000 worth of bags and donates her profits to children’s charities, winning multiple international awards for her work.

Sam
What a great story! This girl clearly has a real social conscience.

Caalii
‘Social conscience’ miira itti gafatamummaa hawwasaa. Yes, and so young.

Sam
I know! It’s always nice to see young people who have a social conscience!

Phil
You and your social conscience, Sam! No, but it’s true - they can then be an example to other young people, too.

Sam
Exactly, often all you need is one person to implement change and others will do the same.

Caalii
‘Implement change’ jechuun jijjiirama hojiirra oolchuu. Have either of you ever implemented any changes?

Phil
Like the girl in the story? No! But I’ve tried to implement small changes in my own life, like reusing plastic bags.

Caalii
I do that, too. Waa’ee deebisanii omishatti jijjiiruu wayita dubbannu kana, mee gara gaafii battalee duranitti haadeebinu: biyya kamtu irra caalaa balfaa deebisee omishatti jijjiira?

Phil
We can all make a difference in small ways.

Caalii
‘Make a difference’ jechuun jijjiirama fiduu. Yes, in small ways, like we were saying earlier, with our plastic bags.

Sam
Yeah, I often wish I could make a bigger difference than I do, though...

Phil
There’s your social conscience again, Sam!

Sam
But, really! I can often see where there’s a problem, but can’t come up with solutions.

Caalii
‘Come up with solutions’ jechuun furmaatawwan fiduu. They described the schoolgirl in the story as a ‘social entrepreneur’ haawaasa keessatti nama hojii uumte for making gift bags from newspaper.

Sam
Exactly! She came up with such a creative solution to a big problem in her country.

Phil
You know, I was just thinking - I’d say that in our team, I’m the one who comes up with the most creative solutions.

Sam
You’re also the one who creates all the problems, Phil!

Phil
Mmh?

Caalii
Oh no, maybe we need to implement some changes here!
