Hello everyone, I’m Sam from BBC Learning English, and today we are going to look at the 3 ways in which we use ‘if only’.

We use this to say that we would like something to be different, but – careful – it has different forms!

1.For the past, we use “if only” + past perfect: “If only I hadn’t left my keys at home.”

2.For the present, we use “if only” + past simple. For example: “If only I understood maths.” Or: “If only I were better at maths”, where we use “were” instead of “was”.

3.And to talk about the future, we use “If only” + would + verb. For example: “If only he would call.”

If only English were easier, eh?

Function/ वापर

‘If only’चा वापर तुम्हाला काहीतरी हवंय पण त्यासाठी काहीतरी अट आहे अशा परिस्थितीत होतो. कुठल्याही काळात याचा अर्थ एकच आहे. इथे वाक्याच्या काळाप्रमाणे शब्दाचे योग्य रूप वापरा.

1.भूतकाळ:

If only + subject + past perfect (had + past participle)

If only I hadn’t left my keys at home.
If only you’d studied harder at school.

2. वर्तमानकाळ:

If only + subject + past simple

If only I understood maths.
If only we danced better. I’m so embarrassed – we’re the worst in the group!

इथे was ऐवजी be चं were हे रूप देखील वापरता येईल.

If only + subject + were

If only I were better at maths.

If only we were better dancers. I’m so embarrassed – we’re the worst in the group!

3. भविष्यकाळ:

If only + would + verb

If only he would call. I’ve been waiting by the phone all day.
If only it would stop raining, we could go outside and play!

‘If only’ or ‘I wish’?

‘If only’ means the same as ‘I wish’ but ‘if only’ can be used to emphasise the point a little more strongly, depending on the context.

I wish you’d told me you were coming!
If only you’d told me you were coming! I would have cleaned the house.

I wish I had a car, but I don’t.
If only I had a car, then I could come and visit you.
