મિત્રો, આજ વાત કરીશું…ચાલો જોઈએ કે તમે ચોક્કસ અનુમાન લગાવી શકો છો કે નહીં. ચર્ચાને આગળ વધારીએ એ પહેલાં તમે ચાર વ્યક્તિઓને સાંભળો, જે કંઈક મહત્ત્વનું જણાવી રહ્યાં છે. અઘરું લાગતું હોય તો ડોન્ટ વરી, અમે તમને શીખવામાં મદદ કરીશું. સાંભળો અને નક્કી કરો કે બધા શું જણાવી રહ્યાં છે.

1. I started primary school when I was 6.
2. I left high school when I was 18 to go to university.
3. I graduated from Manchester University and I got a degree in engineering.
4. I left secondary school when I was 16 and I went to college, where I got a certificate in business

Ok! તો બધા પોતાનાં ભણતર એટલે કે શિક્ષણ વિશે જણાવી રહ્યાં છે. બરાબરને સેમ?

Yes, they used lots of different ways to talk about education. So let’s have a closer look!

હા, તો સૌથી પહેલાં આપણે વિવિધ શૈક્ષણિક સંસ્થાઓ વિશે વાત કરીએ. તમે સાંભળ્યું ‘primary school’ એટલે પ્રાથમિક શાળા, ‘secondary school’ એટલે માધ્યમિક શાળા ‘high school’ એટલે માધ્યમિક શાળા ‘college’ એટલે મહાવિદ્યાલય અને ‘university’ એટલે વિશ્વવિદ્યાલય.

And what verbs did they use with these places? Let’s listen again – the verbs will come before the schools.

‘I started primary school when I was 6.’

‘I left secondary school when I was 16 and I went to college ’

Ok. તમે સાંભળ્યું ‘started’ એટલે કે શરૂ કરવું કે કરાવવું, ‘left’ એટલે કે છોડવું અને ‘went’ એટલે જવું.

And these verbs are all in the past simple. Shall we practise the pronunciation? Please repeat after me:

‘I started primary school when I was 6.’

‘I left secondary school when I was 16…’

‘…and I went to college.’

મિત્રો, શું તમે નોંધ્યું કે અંગ્રેજીમાં‘went’ પછી ‘to’ નો ઉપયોગ કરવામાં આવ્યું છે પણ શાળા વિશે વાત કરતી વખતે ‘the’ નો ઉપયોગ કરવામાં આવ્યો નથી. ફરીથી સાંભળો અને જાણો કે શૈક્ષણિક લાયકાત વિશે તમે અંગ્રેજીમાં કઈ રીતે જણાવશો. મિત્રો, સાંભળો અને જાણો કે કઈ ક્રિયાપદનો બે વખત ઉપયોગ કરવામાં આવ્યો છે.

‘I graduated from Manchester University.’

‘I got a degree in engineering.’

‘I got a certificate in business.’

Did you hear it? The verb they used twice was ‘got’.

હા. વ્યક્તિને કહે છે ‘got a degree in engineering’ એટલે ઇજનેરી પદવી લીધી અને ‘got a certificate in business’ એટલે કે વ્યવસાયિક શિક્ષણનો કોર્ષ પૂર્ણ કર્યું. ‘Degree’ અને ‘a certificate’ પછી અંગ્રેજી શબ્દ ‘in’ નો ઉપયોગ કરવામાં આવ્યો છે કારણકે વાક્યમાં બન્ને કર્તા છે. વ્યક્તિ બન્ને કર્તા ઉપર ભાર આપવા માટે અંગ્રેજી શબ્દ ‘in’ નો ઉપયોગ કરે છે. મિત્રો, બીજો ક્રિયાપદ જે તમે સાંભળ્યું એ છે ‘graduated’, જે ‘graduate’ નો ભૂતકાળ પ્રકાર છે.

And after ‘graduated’, it’s important to remember to use ‘from’ before the name of the place. Let’s practise saying these altogether. Repeat after me:

‘I got a degree in engineering.’

‘I got a certificate in business.’

‘I graduated from Manchester University.’

સરસ! હવે બીજી મહત્ત્તવની વાત! સાંભળો કે વ્યક્તિઓ પોતાની ઉંમર કઈ રીતે જણાવે છે.

‘I started primary school when I was 6.’

‘I left high school when I was 18.’

‘I left secondary school when I was 16.’

બધા ‘when I was’ કહીને ઉંમર જણાવે છે.

school’ શરૂ કર્યું ત્યારે તમારી ઉંમર શું હતી? મિત્રો, જવાબ આપતી વખતે ક્રિયાપદ ‘started’ નો ઉપયોગ કરશો કે પછી ‘left’ નો? પોતાનો જવાબ સેમનાં જવાબ સાથે સરખાવો.
