Tejali
Hello all… welcome to English Together.

Sam
Hi, I’m Sam.

Tom
And I’m Tom. Hi everyone. Welcome to the programme today! Really nice to have you with us.

Sam
You’re in a very good mood today, Tom.

Tom
Yeah, today’s my birthday!

Tejali
Oh, happy birthday, Tom! Happy birthday to you…

Sam
Come here, let me give you a hug!

Tom
Oh. Ok.

Sam
You went the wrong way, Tom. You’re supposed to go right.

Tom
No, you went the wrong way! I always go left.

Tejali
Wait, you two! It’s a study about hugging.

Insert
So we would predict based on our study that hugging in every society is right-dominated. Obviously, the prevalence of hugging, so how often it occurs in a society, that is extremely different across cultures. So there have been studies that Asian countries, for example, show much less hugging behaviour, or social touch in general, but nonetheless, if someone engages in a hug, it’s probably more right-dominated in general.

Tom
Typical! Right-handed people dominate everything, Again!

Sam
Oh, of course, you’re left-handed.

Tom
Yes, I’m left-handed. And my dad and my brother are left-handed, too. And I’m tired of the bias against left-handed people.

Tejali
Do you really think that there is ‘a bias against’– left-handed people?

Tom
Absolutely. I’ve felt it all my life. I think there’s a bias against us in everything from how desks and chairs are designed in schools to how…hugs are given, apparently.

Sam
It sounds like you think that being left-handed is an affliction, Tom.

Tejali
Yes, it does. You can also ‘be afflicted by something’,

Tom
Yeah , like a disease or an illness! I think it does feel like an affliction sometimes.

Sam
I don’t agree with that at all! I think left-handed people are special!

Tom
Special?

Sam
Yes, because there’s so few of you in the world!

Tejali
Actually, that’s a good point Sam, and it relates to our quiz question for today.

Sam
I don’t know the exact number, but I know that it’s low. And I also know that, being left-handed is associated with high levels of intelligence.

Tejali
‘To be associated with’ म्हणजे संबंधित. Ah ha! Would you agree with that, Tom? That left-handed people are more intelligent?

Tom
Well, of course I agree with that!

Sam
I thought you might! But it’s true – left-handed people are associated with being good at maths, for example.

Tejali
And sports!

Sam
And the number of left-handed people who become Nobel Prize winners and presidents is disproportionately high.

Tejali
Wait a moment, Sam. Before you start talking about what is disproportionately high, let’s see what the answer to the quiz was.

So, you were right, Sam. It was a small number.

Sam
Very small! Proving that the number of left-handed people who are successful is disproportionately high. So, you see, Tom? Being left-handed is actually a bonus!

Tejali
Has Sam convinced you, Tom? Are you special?

Tom
Well, I’m not sure that I agree that being left-handed is a bonus or that it makes us special! But, as it is my birthday, I will agree that, yes, just for today, I’m special.

Sam
Yay! Happy birthday, Tom.

Tejali
Sorry Tom, we didn’t get you a cake!
‘a bias against’ म्हणजे पूर्वग्रह, ‘an affliction’ दु;ख किंवा दु;खाच मूळ कारण, ‘to be associated with’म्हणजे संबधित असणे, आणि  ‘A bonus, याचा इथे अर्थ घेतलाय आणखी फायद्याचं ’. Bye!
