Tejali

Tom
Welcome back everyone! Tom here!

James
And I'm James. Hi everyone!

Tom
James? What's the matter?

James
I've just been listening to a new song. It's really beautiful, but it's quite sad!

Tom
Hmmm… it's interesting, how some people like sad songs while others don't.

Tejali

One of the things that we were interested in is 'what's the difference between people who listen to sad music and who love it, and people who listen to sad music and who just can't stand it.

In our research, it started pointing towards a hormone called prolactin. Now, prolactin, as you might guess from the name, is associated with 'lactation' from breast-feeding. When people cry, they also release prolactin. And, there are circumstances in which prolactin seems to have this comforting effect.

Tom
He said some people love sad music, but others can't stand it.

Tejali
Can't stand
I can't stand smell of strong perfume.

James
Me neither – but I do enjoy sad songs. He said it was because of a hormone called prolactin.

Tejali
Hormone

Tom
So, the comforting effect of sad music is because of the hormone called prolactin. And because of is our language point today.

Tejali

One of the things that we were interested in is 'what's the difference between people who listen to sad music and who love it, and people who listen to sad music and who just can't stand it.

James
There were three examples – interested in, difference between and listen to.

That's right. Listen to part of the recording again – how does the professor say seems to.

Tejali
Seems to

Insert
There are circumstances in which prolactin seems to have this comforting effect.

Tom
He said seems to– in fast connected speech, we pronounce 'to' as 'tuh'.

James
That's right – practise the pronunciation with me.

Seems
Tuh
Seems tuh

Tom
Thank you James, but we seem to have gone off topic. This explains why some people like sad music, but it doesn't explain why some people don't.

Tejali

Insert
So the thought was that, perhaps what's going on is that the people who are enjoying listening to sad music are receiving some sort of excess of prolactin, and people who are listening to sad music and they just find it incredibly sad and unhelpful and they don't want to listen to it, maybe they're not getting enough prolactin when they listen to the music.

Tejali
Can you give us some examples Tom?

Tom
Of course! We could say seems to. Some other examples are perhaps and maybe – all of these suggest possibility.

Tejali
Perhaps

James
Another piece of vague language the professor uses is 'sort of'.

Tejali
Sort of म्हणजे च्यासारखे. Sort of म्हणजे ... Bye!

Language features

1.  Accepting offers -

Yes please. That would be lovely.
I’d love some, thanks!

‘Yes please’
 हे सर्रास वापरलं जातं, त्यानंतर म्हणायचं ‘that would be lovely’.

दुसऱ्या उदाहरणात ‘I’d love some’ किंवा ‘I’d love one’वापरतात.

 2. Refusing offers –

I’m ok thanks.

Thanks, but I’m really full.

इथे आपण ‘I’m fine thanks’, किंवा  ‘I’m alright thanks’सुद्धा वापरू शकतो.
