Bolam
안녕하세요? English Together에 오신 것을 환영합니다. 저희 프로그램에서는 최신 주제에 대해 얘기해보고 관련 표현을 알려드리고 있습니다. 저는 손보람입니다.

Tom
Hello, to our audience, I’m Tom, welcome to today’s episode and I’m here with…

Phil
Hi I’m Phil! Welcome.

Tom
Thank you, Phil. So, Phil, I don’t know about you, but I am absolutely boiling here in the studio today!

Phil
Oh! Me, too!

Tom
Yeah. It’s really hot.

Bolam
Boiling 푹푹 찌는, 무척 덥다는 뜻이죠. 아주 극단적인 표현이기 때문에 ‘absolutely’ 같은 부사와 같이 쓸 수 있어요. Make sure to drink enough water!

Tom
In the news recently there’s been a lot of concern about water shortages in Delhi and Cape Town. Is that an issue for you?

Bolam
Water shortage 물 부족이라는 뜻입니다. 물 얘기가 나온김에 오늘 문제 내드릴게요.

Phil
Speaking of water use, this brings us to today’s question. According to Watercalculator.org, how much water does the average person use per day in the United Arab Emirates?

a) 100 litres
b) 1,000 litres
c) 10,000 litres

We’ll tell you the answer later in the programme.

Tom
Well, that’s certainly a lot more water than the residents of Shimla have been using. The Indian city has been experiencing extreme water shortages recently. Let’s listen to today’s news clip from BBC World Service’s World Business Report. How is the water shortage affecting the local economy?

Devina
It’s almost noon in the popular tourist city of Shimla. It is called the Queen of Hills but there has been a 50% water shortage.  Tourism is a main source of income here. Around thirty-thousand people visit Shimla every day from different parts of India to escape the summer heat and enjoy the green scenic hills.  But this year hotels are finding it extremely difficult to provide water to their guests. Almost 60% of advanced bookings have already been cancelled.

Phil
Wow! That’s such a shame. Not only are the people of Shimla short of water, they’re also losing the business that tourism brings in!

Tom
And it sounds like it’s a very popular place, too. The reporter said it was popular with people during hot spells.

Bolam
A hot spell 폭염, 무더위라는 뜻이죠.  Heatwave라고 하기도 합니다.

Phil
I think increasingly hot temperatures just exacerbate the problem, really.

Bolam
Exacerbate 악화시키다..라는 뜻이죠? Can you explain more, Phil?

Phil
Well, take farming for example. Heatwaves can make the land dry, meaning we have to use more water for irrigation.

Bolam
Irrigation 관개..라는 뜻입니다.

Tom
And, let’s not forget that populations are increasing all the time, as well! Would you say there is an increase in demand for water in your country?

Bolam
An increase in demand 수요의 증가라는 뜻입니다. 자 이제 오늘의 정답을 알려드릴 때가 된 것 같은데요. 정답은 C입니다.

Tom
Wow! 10,000 litres!

Bolam
Maybe we all need to think about how we will manage to share this water in future.

Phil
Definitely. I’m sure people everywhere can take steps to cut down on their water consumption.

Bolam
Cut down on 감소시키다..라는 뜻입니다. Taking short showers, for example, could help us to cut down on our water usage.

Tom
I do agree with what you’re saying, but how can I cut down my water consumption in this heat?! It really does exacerbate everything! I’m going to get a drink and have a nice cold shower.

Bolam
Careful Tom! It’s hot outside! 여러분은 어떠세요? water shortages 물부족은 여러분에게 어떤 영향을 끼치나요? 물부족은 hot spells or heatwaves 때문에 발생하기도 하죠. 또 irrigation농업용 관개로 인해 물이 많이 소비된다는 것도 오늘 살펴보았죠. 여러분은 우리의 수자원이 mismanaged 잘못 관리되고 있다고 생각하시나요? Bye!

Meaning & Use

extreme adjectives

Extreme adjectives describe a noun in the strongest way possible. Instead of ‘very hot’, we could say ‘boiling’. We don’t use ‘very’ with extreme adjectives. Instead, we use strong adverbs such as ‘absolutely’.

  • I didn’t go to sleep last night – I’m absolutely exhausted!
  • It was the scariest film I have ever seen! In fact, it was absolutely terrifying!

to exacerbate

To exacerbate is a more formal way of saying ‘to make (something) worse’. Often, we use it to refer to a problem or situation which is already bad. It can be used to describe current situations, where it is used in the present continuous tense.

  • During an argument, shouting can often exacerbate things.
  • Upcoming elections are exacerbating political problems in the country.

hot spell / heatwave

When we are experiencing a period of hot weather we can describe it as a hot spell. When this period becomes longer and / or more severe it becomes a heatwave.

  • We’re having a hot spell at the moment so the weather should still be nice tomorrow!
  • The government asked people to stay inside as the heatwave continued.
