The story
Humans last travelled into deep space 45 years ago when Apollo 17 became the last manned trip to the Moon back in 1972.
This announcement by SpaceX of a manned trip to circumnavigate the Moon next year caught most observers off guard.
It's an incredibly ambitious timetable because at this point the company hasn't even launched a human being into space.
