Bolam
Hello Phil!

Phil
Hello everyone!

Bolam

Phil
Today we are going to be talking about what things were like in the past, so I asked people to talk about the first house they lived in.

Bolam

Phil
Well, first I asked Sam how her first house compared to where she lives now.

Sam
There was a bigger garden. There were more rooms. There was a better view. It was over a valley and a river. There were fewer neighbours, so it was quieter.

Phil
It sounds like it was nicer. What language should we look at?

Bolam
여기서 중요한 표현은 바로 there was와 there were 입니다.

Phil
So, what’s the difference between them?

Bolam
‘There was a bigger garden’ 그리고 there were는 뒤에 복수가 나올 때 씁니다. ‘There were more rooms’ 이렇게요.

Phil
Thanks... now let’s see how Dan’s first house compares.

Dan
It was loud, because it was next to a police station. It was small. There weren’t many rooms so there wasn’t much space. There was a small balcony.

Phil
So, quite a different house - is the language different as well?

Bolam

Phil
And how do you put that in a sentence?

Bolam
Dan은 ’there wasn’t much space’ 공간이 많이 없었다 라고 했는데요. ‘Wasn’t’, ‘was not’의 줄임말이죠? ‘There weren’t many rooms’ 방이 많이 없었다 라는 뜻인데요. ‘Weren’t’, ‘were not’의 줄임말입니다.

Phil
Ok, thanks - now listen to Tom.

Phil
Were there as many neighbours as you have now?

Tom
No there weren't, it was a small town, but there were more neighbours that I knew.

Phil
Ah, it was in a small town, so was there a big garden?

Tom
Yeah, there was.

Phil
So, what did we have there?

Bolam
‘Was there a big garden?’ ‘Were there any as many neighbours?’ 이렇게 there와 was, were의 자리를 바꿔서 의문문을 만들었습니다.

Phil
Thanks, now let’s see how much you can remember with this test! I want to talk about the house that I grew up in. I want to talk about the big living room, and I want to talk about the three bedrooms upstairs, and that it didn’t have a bathroom upstairs. How can I say that using there was and there were?

Bolam
There was there were

Phil
Ready?

Bolam

Phil
There was a big living room, and there were three bedrooms upstairs. There wasn't a bathroom upstairs.

Bolam

Phil
If you got that, fantastic. Right, let's stop here, was there something you didn't know before the programme that you do now?

Bolam
There was, there were를 사용해 과거에 있었던 것을 얘기해보았습니다. Bye!

Phil
Bye!
