Bolam

Tom
Hi everybody, welcome to today's episode!

Sian
Hi, I'm Sian! Before we begin, I have a question. Would you two like to go for dinner this evening?

Tom
Oh, that sounds nice!

Bolam

Sian
We can have a Korean or an Indian.

Bolam

Sian
Of course not! Sometimes, instead of saying 'let's go out for an Indian meal', we just say, 'let's go out for an Indian'.

Bolam
The National Restaurant Association

a) 27%
b) 37%
c) 47%

Sian
The internet is great! I've already used it to reserve tables at both restaurants!

Tom
You can't reserve tables at both restaurants! We'll be no-shows!

Bolam
I'm not sure how I feel about this…오늘은 BBC Radio 4의 You and Yours에 나왔던 내용을 들어보도록 하겠습니다.

Presenter
Damian Wawrzyniak runs the House of Feasts restaurant in the village of Eye Green near Peterborough. There's little to no passing trade, so bookings are crucial. No-shows can be devastating.

Damian
I remember we had one weekend where probably, in total, over thirty-odd people didn't show up. We tried to call, email, there was no answer, no response. We lost nearly two and a half, three thousand pounds on one weekend. And out of this I need to pay the electricity, I need to pay the bills, I need to pay the staff, rent, business rates, blah blah blah, the list is endless!

Tom
You see, Sian?! He's lost three thousand pounds! No wonder restaurants are strapped for cash!

Bolam
To be strapped for cash

Sian
They can't be cash-strapped! They're already expensive!

Tom
Well, if we don't show up at the restaurant then the prices are going to increase! Restaurants need to compensate themselves for their lost earnings!

Bolam
Compensate는 보상하다.. I don't want to have to compensate restaurants because other people are no-shows!

Sian
Well, I don't feel too bad, to be honest. I see what you mean about there being scope for abuse in the booking system – people often don't show up for their tables. But there's scope for abuse in the restaurant industry, too!

Bolam
Why do you think there's scope for abuse,

Sian
Well, some restaurants don't pay their staff well. Some overcharge tourists... They're certainly not perfect! The man in the news shouldn't complain – it's the pot calling the kettle black!

Bolam
'The pot calling the kettle black' 직역하면 냄비가 주전자보고 검다고 한다..

Sian
Exactly! And now some restaurants have started to name-and-shame their no-shows on social media! That's not very friendly, either!

Bolam

Tom
Listen, it sounds like there's a lack of trust between restaurants and their customers. In my opinion, most restaurants are perfectly honest and professional! And, speaking of which, are you going to come to dinner with us this evening?

Bolam
I'm not sure…I'll tell you later. Or maybe I'll just be a no-show.

Sian
Hey! You can't do that! How rude!

Tom
You see, Sian? That really is the pot calling the kettle black!

Bolam

Meaning & Use

Adjectives as nouns

We usually indicate nationality using adjectives. However, in the context of food, adjectives of nationality can be used as nouns to describe a type of cuisine.

  • I really fancy Chinese tonight.

When we add an article, the noun can be understood as ‘a meal’.

  • Do you want to go out for an Indian?

the pot calling the kettle black

We use the expression ‘the pot calling the kettle black’ to suggest that the criticisms that a speaker makes regarding another person could also apply to the speaker themselves. It implies hypocrisy.

  • He told me I needed to eat more healthily and then went for a burger! That’s the pot calling the kettle black!
  • My father says I am a bad driver but he’s the one who damaged the car! Talk about the pot calling the kettle black.

compensate

When we compensate someone, we provide them with something (usually money) in order to lessen the effects of a loss they are experiencing.

  • Restaurant owners have asked the council to compensate them for lost earnings after they closed the road outside the building.

Compensation is the noun form. It relates to the amount of money/object etc. offered and received by those involved.

  • I received compensation from my employer after I fell over on a wet floor in the office.
