Kee

Tom
Hi everybody, I’m Tom. Welcome once again to English Together!

Phil
And I’m Phil. Welcome!

Kee

Tom
I think ‘organic food’ refers to food which grown organically, or naturally, without the input of synthetic chemicals.

Kee

Phil
I think it’s a bit of a fad.

Kee

Phil
A fad is a strong trend that doesn’t last very long. People forget about it very quickly, despite their initial interest.

Kee

Tom
That’s a lot of money for a fad, Phil.

Phil
I mean, I think trends are market-driven anyway.

Kee

Phil
So, businesses will produce more of something, as they know that people will continue to buy it, regardless of whether it’s good or not.

Tom
But I do think that people have real concerns about things like animal welfare and the environment, don’t you?

Kee
Animal welfare

Phil
That’s very nice, but synthetic chemicals allow us to grow more and they don’t affect nutrition!

Kee

Tom
Hmm. I think the jury’s out about whether organic food is actually any better for us nutritionally.

Kee

Phil
I’m telling you that it isn’t any healthier! It’s just a faddy idea that people have that food suppliers are cashing in on!

Kee
Cash in on something은, 무엇으로부터 돈을 번다는 뜻 입니다. What do you think about that, Phil?

Phil
Well, let’s listen to the experts shall we? Here’s today’s clip from BBC Radio 4’s You and Yours.

Kee
Good idea!

Presenter
In 2009 the Food Standards Agency commissioned a study. It concluded that there are no important differences in the nutritional content or any additional health benefits of organic when it's compared with conventionally-produced food.

Dr Allison Tedstone, their Chief Nutritionist, says the current evidence doesn't support the idea that organic food is any better for you.

Dr Tedstone
Of course, there are there are reasons why people might want to consume organic food and it's to do with farming practice, to do with consumer choice. But, as a nation, we really need to focus on improving our diet, and I wouldn’t particularly worry about the organic provenance of food.

Kee

Phil
You see, it’s all a fad! No wonder people are cashing in! Are you going to tell us how big the market is in the UK?

Kee

Phil
Exactly, that’s far too much money to spend on unnecessary organic products. It’s ridiculous! You know what, I’m leaving. And I’m going to eat a nice, normal, non-organic lunch!

Kee
Bye!

Meaning & Use

-driven

We use -driven as a suffix to indicate forces which strongly influence something.  It is always hyphenated in this form.

  • The old trains don’t use electric – they are steam-driven!
  • The trends in mobile phones are consumer-driven. Companies just give consumers what they want!

synthetic

Synthetic describes products which are not made naturally. The products come from a process of chemical synthesis.
We often use this word to describe chemical production. The verb is to synthesise.

  • After his car accident, doctors were able to provide Adam with a new, synthetic leg. He can walk again!
  • Don’t eat junk food! All the flavour has been synthesised by scientists!

nutrition

Nutrition refers to the process of gaining the necessary products from food which allow us to grow. These chemicals, often vitamins and minerals, are called nutrients. If something helps our body to grow well we can say that it is nutritious.

  • You should lots of vegetables! They are very nutritious.
  • Fresh food often has more nutrients in it than food which has been processed.
