Hi guys, this is Kee from BBC Learning English. Today I'm going to tell you the differences between 'must' and 'have to'.

Both 'must' and 'have to' talk about obligations…however!

Now, we use 'have to' when we talk about obligations others decide for us. It's a law or a rule, so it cannot be changed.
For example, at BBC, we have to show our passes to enter the building. This is a rule decided by the BBC.

On the other hand, we use 'must' to talk about obligations we decide for ourselves or others. For example, my boss might say to me 'you must be more organised', or I might say to myself 'I must exercise more often.

Function/वापर

We use 'must' to talk about obligations which we decide for ourselves or for others.

- I must clean my room.
- I must stop smoking.

We use 'have to' to talk about obligations which are decided by others. These are often rules and orders from someone else.
- I have to clean my room.
- I have to stop smoking.

Structure/रचना

Both 'must' and 'have to' function as modal verbs, so they are always followed by a bare infinitive.

- I must/have to clean my room. (correct)
- I must/have to cleaned my room. (incorrect)

One major difference is that 'must' does not have a past form, whereas have to can be used in the past tense, as in 'had to'.
महत्त्वाचा फरक म्हणजे mustचं  भूतकाळी रूपही mustचं असतं, पण have to चा भूतकाळ 'had to' होतो.

- I had to go to school during the summer holidays.

- I had to wear a suit to work.
