Hello everyone, I’m Sam from BBC Learning English, today we’re looking at different ways to use the word ‘actually’.

1.We use it to talk about what is true, like the word ‘really’. ‘Are bats actually blind?’

2.We use it to correct or contradict.
(off camera: ‘Are you from London, Sam?’)
‘Actually, no, I’m from Oxford.’

3.We use it to emphasise that something is different or surprising.
‘I love fish, but I actually don’t like prawns.’

4.We use it to admit or confess to something.
(off camera: ‘Did you eat the last chocolate, Sam?’)
‘Actually, yes, I did.’

5.And we use it to add information.
‘I’m a teacher. And so are my parents, actually.’

So, it’s actually a very useful word!

Function/કેવી રીતે ઉપયોગ કરવું

1.To talk about what is true.

We use this like the word ‘really’.
Are bats actually blind?
Can you actually hold your breath for 3 minutes? Show me!

2. To correct or contradict.

This is used in a conversation when you want to respond to something the other person has said.
A. Are you from London, Sam?
B. Actually, no, I’m from Oxford.

A. You like steak, don’t you?
B. I don't eat meat, actually. I'm a vegetarian.

3.To emphasise that something is different or surprising.

We use this when saying something that goes against common logic or goes against something that is assumed.
I love fish, but I actually don’t like prawns.
People think fruit is really healthy, but it’s actually full of sugar.

4.To admit or confess to something.

We often use this when someone is accusing us of something and we are confirming they are correct.
A. Did you eat the last chocolate, Sam?
B. I did, actually.

A. Did you break the window in the kitchen?
B. Actually, I did, yes. I’m sorry, Dad. We were playing football.

5.To add information.

This is used to add extra information to the main point we are making, sometimes as an afterthought or a sudden realisation.
I’m a teacher. And so are both my parents, actually.
We’re going to the cinema later. Actually, would you like to come?

Where does it go in a sentence?

A.To talk about what is true, like 'really': in the middle, before what it is describing as 'real'. No commas.
Are bats actually blind?

B.To contradict or correct: at the beginning of the sentence, followed by a comma. Or at the end of the sentence, after a comma.
A. Are you from London, Sam?
B. Actually, no, I’m from Oxford.

A. You like steak, don’t you?
B. I don't eat meat, actually. I'm a vegetarian.

C.All other uses: at the beginning, in the middle or at the end of the sentence. See numbers A & B for comma rules.
