Last Choir Standing goes to Derby

12th August 2008

Dale DivasFollowing the success of our Hull event, excitement is rising as we approach Saturday 16th August, the day when the Last Choir Standing Live Singing Event comes to Derby. Taking place in front of the Big Screen, Market Place the event promises to be a hugely entertaining and enjoyable afternoon.

Hosted by Radio Derby’s Aleena Naylor the afternoon will feature a singing workshop given by Mike Brewer OBE in which the entire audience will participate. Mike is a leading figure in the choral world who in addition to being director of the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain, and musical director of award winning chamber choir Laudibus, is in demand worldwide for vocal and conducting workshops and guest conducting of choirs. Mike will work with the audience throughout the event teaching at least two songs, an African chant and a Gospel song. Accompanying Mike during the workshop will be two visiting drummers from South Africa, Paepae and Dennis.

To provide the audience and Mike with some periods of respite during the singing workshop we will be entertained with performances from the DaleDiva and Sosa-Xa! choirs.

DaleDiva are Derbyshire’s newest ladies’ choir led by Chorus Director Ally Law which has members from all over the Derbyshire Dales. With a repertoire of contemporary songs they sing a variety of 4-part, unaccompanied arrangements, mainly in the ‘barbershop style’.

SOSA-XA! was formed in 2001, originally as a link between Sheffield and the Sunduza Dance Theatre in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. The choir which is led by Mandla Sibanda explores the music of a number of Southern African languages. Whilst some of the songs are traditional others have been composed by Simon Banda, musical director of Sunduza, as well as by Mandla Sibanda. They work using natural voice techniques in the “a cappella” tradition but using expressive choreography characteristic of imbube music made famous by Paul Simon on his album Graceland.

The event starts at 3.00pm and will run for approximately 90 minutes. All tickets for seats have now been taken but as the event is happening in a public space, it will be possible to watch, from outside the seating area, as its relayed live onto the Big Screen. So please come along and be a part of the Last Choir Standing Live Singing Event.

Photos and video highlights featuring the choirs and workshop will be made available to view on the website after the event.
