Money or pain, it's all the same
When I was dating a man from Cuerna Vaca, my Spanish was stretched and tried in new ways. I had not spoken as much Spanish as I had read and written up to that point, so he found a lot of faults with my pronunciation. He did not speak English. We were selling at a flea market, and I told a young man, "Diez dólares por los maceteras.", ten dollars for the flowerpots. When the man walked away, my then boyfriend burst into laughter and begged me to say "dólares" more clearly. He said it sounded like I had said, "dolores", pains. He teased me for a long time about "Diez dólares por los maceteras." Pronunciation is everything!
