A hike for me and my beetroot
I remember telling a group of Spaniards about my first visit to Spain when I was 18. I tried to go hitchhiking, but without much success. One of the factors in my lack of success was, I explained, the huge rucksack on my back. Unfortunately, I confused the word for a rucksack una mochila with the word for a beetroot una remolacha. It was altogether a rather surreal image!

I had a similar problem early on with the words jabón and jamón. Jabón means "soap". Jamón means "ham". Obviously, this situation was ripe for some rather interesting misunderstandings.

This is very funny and a common mistake when you are trying to remember words with similar spelling.

In a Spanish nightclub I once said "Soy calor" to a young man but I found out from my Spanish teacher that I should have said "Tengo calor"! Luckily the man laughed it off!
