Work with cognates

I've just picked up learning French. I memorize new words by taking a word that resembles or relates somehow to a word in another language I know and which I use frequently, for example English. E.g: bleu - blue; tricolore - three colours; nouveau correspondant - new correspondent.

I think words which sound similar in both French and English (or any other language) are called 'cognates.'

This will work ok sometimes, but be careful of faux amis, false friends! Eg - une librairie refers to a bookstore, while library in French is une bibliothèque.
