Use post-its
I write words and phrases on a yellow sticker. I stick it on the kitchen window and when I'm washing up I can memorize the words. I also stick them on the piano, so when I practise the piano, I also memorize foreign words.

Instead of high-lighting you should circle the words as your mind is not focused on the colours but is going over the word twice.
I know that this may sound sexist, but use a pink post-it for feminine words, a blue post-it for masculine and a yellow one for neuter. It does help when remembering the gender!
You can take this further. Every time you pass a post-it note with the word of an item on it, say it in the language you are learning: 'this is a knife', 'the knife is here'. Then try it in the plural, with adjectives, etc.
I bought myself a small telephone address book. When I'm learning a new French word or phrase I put it under the appropriate letter, eg 'we' phrases go in the W section. I also include, if possible, the phonetic. The book is small enough for my pocket or handbag. When a memory lapse occurs, out comes my little 'blue' book.
Make out your daily/weekly grocery list in the language you're learning.
I always do the post-it thing when I have problems remembering something. I put it on my monitor, because I spend most of my time in front of the computer.
Good idea, but also try to use these words in a context, eg. write a short text using the words.
I guess its the same type of thing, but I find it helpful to put a list of vocab you always forget in your pocket, so every time you have a spare moment, or every time you put your hand in your pocket, you can take it out and learn a few words!

I keep a small notebook in my pocket with a current list of vocab words and look at it when a spare moment comes along! I find it very effective with my own written phonetic system for Chinese.
