Don't worry about mistakes

Don't worry too much about mistakes. It's a normal part of the learning process, and you'll learn much more quickly by having a go at speaking than by saying nothing until you're word perfect. Generally, people are only too pleased to hear you trying to speak their language and make allowances if you don't get it exactly right.

I make mistakes in Russian many times and even though I get much laughter they understand and are very happy that at least I'm trying. So my best tip would be to
get out off your shell and speak speak speak!

I totally agree with this tip. However adults in particular find it very hard. I try to make my students understand that the main object is to communicate. Remember how little children start to learn...they don't come out with full, grammatically correct sentences but they usually end up getting what they want!
