Reminds me of my friend's father who asked for a dry martini in bar in Austria and was suprised to get three: drei Martini.
Ah yes, the good old "mir ist" vs "ich bin". . reminds me of school days in the 70's when so many of us inadvertently came out of the closet by uttering "ich bin warm" (I'm gay) instead of "mir ist warm" (I'm warm)!
That must have been really embarrassing! I like this section, it's so funny :)
A friend of mine is married to a German lady. Just before they married he went to Germany to meet her family.
At a large family gathering his soon-to-be sister-in-law came to the door. Greeting her for the very first time my friend meant to say "Come in and take your coat off". What he actually said was "Come in and take your clothes off".
I suspect his sister-in-law will not forget that initial meeting in a hurry.
Well, it is funny .... Just replace 'ich bin' with 'mir ist' and you have it right ... lol
... a German in California
Years ago my German grandmother was in the hospital, where a nice young doctor tried to speak to her in German. He intended to ask her, "How are you tonight?" But unfortunately, instead of saying "Nacht" for night, he said, "nackt" which means naked!

Now fluent in German, I recall this toe curling episode - I arrived in Germany at a friends house just outside Konstanz - All the family sat at the dinner table.
