Watch and recount events

Use these steps to...
...encourage learners to tell what happened. You might tell them that they are giving a witness statement to the police!

Select video clips...
...with plenty of movement, two or three different people or perhaps a car. It need not be in the target language, as you don't need the soundtrack.
  1. Before watching, set the scene in the target language. Ask learners to watch closely, as you will ask them about what happened.

  2. Play the clip through without the sound.

  3. Ask the learners:
    (a) How many people they saw
    (b) How many cars
    (c) Some detail about each person/vehicle to identify them

  4. Ask each learner/pair/group of learners to focus on one particular person or vehicle. Play the clip again.

  5. Invite each learner/pair/group to recount the actions of the person or vehicle they were watching.
