Watch, listen and identify specifics

Use these steps to...
...help the learners focus on figures or other specifics and find and explain what they relate to.

Select video clips...
...with plenty of numbers, times, proper nouns or perhaps national specialities. You can vary the mix and complexity of the items according to the learner's individual level and the group.
  1. In the target language, explain the context of the video clip and give everyone a list of the numbers, times or names you want the learners to listen out for. E.g. €18, 20h00 or "la ficelle picarde".

  2. Run the clip a first time, and invite students to listen carefully and simply tick the items from the list as they hear them.

  3. Play the clip a second time if necessary for the learners to "tune in" and locate each discrete item.

  4. Then ask different members of the group to focus on one or more of the different items, listen once more and find out just what each figure or name represents: €18 is the cost of the fixed price menu, 20h00 is the time of the table reservation, "la ficelle picarde" is a stuffed pancake.

  5. Invite learners to present their findings to the class.
