Video Get the most out of video

Watch, listen and check

Use these steps to...
... help learners to pick out discrete items of information, after careful preparation.
  1. Before the session, draw up a sheet in the target language with some key expressions from the clip, some True/False statements about what is heard and a small number of requests for specific information from the dialogue.

  2. Give everyone a copy of your sheet and ask them to look at the key expressions. Ask the learners to predict where the dialogue will take place, who will be speaking and what they will be doing.

  3. Watch the video and ask the group to check off the key expressions when they hear them.

  4. Read out the True/False statements (checking that everyone understands them). Run the video again, and ask the group to check whether the statements are true or false. Check the findings, and ask for the false statements to be corrected.

  5. Finally, focus on the questions needing specific information from the dialogue. Run the video once more and ask the learners to listen for the information needed.
