Video Get the most out of video

Watch and guess

Objective:
To encourage learners to get clues from the context.

Ask questions in the target language...
...adapting your language to the level of the learners. Invite answers in the target language too, but don't frown on answers in English. Someone else in the group might well be able to supply the appropriate expression.
  1. Play the video clip with no sound. Don't tell the learners anything about the clip in advance.

  2. After viewing, ask the learners:
    (a) What can they tell you about where it takes place?
    (b) What can they tell you about the characters involved?
    (c) What might the characters be talking about?

  3. Ask the group to brain-storm words and expressions they might hear on the recording. Write them up on the board.

  4. Play the clip again and afterwards ask the learners to tick off the expressions as they hear them.

  5. You may want to turn this into a game: ask the learners to work individually or in pairs and give them a point for each detail / word they get right.
