Uruguay is a country whose major industry was large-scale beef and sheep farming. There was little or no work for the women.

In 1968 a group of women joined together to unite their skills and see if they could turn them to profitable use. The result was 'Manos del Uruguay', a cooperative movement that specialises in hand-knitted clothes and woven decorations.
