Mango, Zara, Camper - sound familiar? Recently these Spanish fashion brands have been taking the British high street by storm, forging themselves a place at the heart of the European fashion scene, and prompting calls of 'move over Armani, the Spanish are coming'.
Spanish footwear firm Camper started in Majorca, and has grown to include branches in London and more than 200 outlets in department stores such as Liberty and Selfridges. These trendy shoes come in a variety of styles, and are often teamed up with street wear from Pull and Bear, another of Spain's hotter young brands, or the more upmarket clothes of Barcelona-based chain Massimo Dutti. Spanish designers are also becoming better known and have their own exclusive clientele. For example designer Armand Basi, best known for providing wardrobes for the James Bond films, lists Kevin Spacey and Noel Gallagher among its clients. There is also Galicia's Caramelo, and the functional yet classic designs of another Galician designer Adolfo Domínguez. One of Spain's most colourful designers continues to be Agatha Ruíz de la Prada. Her extravagant and unconventional designs - dresses emblazoned with massive hearts, for example - and her declared mission to 'agathise' the world have aroused great media interest and controversy. Today you can find her creations, including children's clothes, sportswear and even home interiors, in some of Spain's largest department stores.
