Being one of the most popular destinations for British nationals, you will find that there is an extensive English-speaking community - especially in the South. As tempting as it is to stick with your mother tongue, it is advised that you prepare a little before you go. The Spanish will appreciate any effort made to speak the language.

Before leaving:

• Consider doing a self-study course, or attending Spanish classes
• Make a note of useful vocabulary for the kind of situations you expect to deal with and which aren't covered in the phrasebook.

Once you get there:

• Consider continuing your Spanish studies at a language school
• Practise, practise, practise!
