Essential basic phrases

The domed church just visible in the centre is the Church of Santa Engrácia ( Igreja de Santa Engrácia), and the large building to the left at the top of the hill is the Church or Monastery of São Vicente de Fora (meaning 'Monastery of St. Vincent Outside the Walls). The Alfama is one of the only areas of the city that escaped largely unscathed from the 1755 earthquakeand still has many of its medieval buildings.
