How to say 'It's the...' -
a few basics
È il teatro romano
La casa di Giulietta
- To say 'It is...' you simply say È... - you use the same word to ask 'is it...?'
- To say 'the' there are different words, because all things in Italian, as well as people, are either masculine or feminine.
- You use il with nearly all masculine words. Most masculine words end in -o. You use la with feminine words. Most words ending in -a are feminine. Both shorten to l' before a vowel.
- Words ending in other letters can be masculine or feminine, but dictionaries will help you out by showing f (for feminine) or m (for masculine) after the word.
