How to understand what you must do or can do - a few basics

Quando devo riportarla?

  • When you must or have to do something, you'll be told deve (or devi if you're on first-name terms) followed by a verb ending in -are, -ere or -ire.


  • When you want to ask if you must do something, you use Devo...?


  • To ask if you're allowed to do something, you say Posso...? which is also followed by a verb ending in -are, -ere or -ire.


  • Similarly, if you want to give someone permission to do something, you say Può..., or Puoi... if you're on first-name terms.
