, and
uno
can all mean a/an or one.
un
is used with most masculine words:
un adulto
an/one adult
un cappuccino
a/one cappuccino
un bar
a/one bar
but
uno
is used with masculine words beginning with
z
, or with an
s
followed by a consonant:
uno zoo
a/one zoo
uno scontrino
a/one receipt
You also use
uno
with words beginning with
gn
and
ps
and loan words beginning with
y
and
x
.
una
is used with feminine words beginning with a consonant:
una donna
a/one woman
una pasta
a/one pasta
but
un'
is used with feminine words beginning with a vowel:
un'aranciata
an/one orange-juice
un'ora
an/one hour
un / una / un' / uno
all mean 'one', but when you're counting you only use
uno
:
un'aranciata
an/one orange-juice
