How to say what you do and where you work - a few basics

Cosa fa?
Sono addetto al marketing.
Dove lavora?
Lavoro a Londra.

  • To say what job you do, you can say Sono plus your job, but without the word for 'a'.

  • To say 'I work in...' you say Lavoro a..., followed by the name of the town or city. To ask 'Where do you work?' you say Dove lavora? If you are on first-name terms, you'd say Dove lavori?

  • Lavoro, lavora and lavori are verbs. In a dictionary, they are listed as lavorare, to work. This dictionary form is known as the infinitive.

  • For other verbs, such as abitare, to live, or parlare, to speak, you just change the ending in the same way.
