How to say what hurts and what you need - a few basics

Ho mal di stomaco
Ho la tosse
Ho bisogno di uno spazzolino elettrico

  • If you say you have a cough, a temperature or the flu, you say ho and then the ailment, for example Ho la tosse (literally 'the cough', and not 'a cough' as in English).

  • To say that you've got a specific ache you say Ho mal di... directly followed by the name for the part of the body.

  • To say that something hurts you say Mi fa male..., followed by the part of the body that hurts.

  • To say that you need something, you use Ho bisogno di..., directly followed by what you want, without the words for some or any.
