How to say what's happened - a few basics

Sono stata così felice di conoscerti
Ho perduto il mio cellulare

  • In English the past is often conveyed in one word, eg lost, went... In Italian you need to use two words, eg ho perduto, sono andato.

  • To ask someone how something was, or has been, you say: Com'è stato? 'How was it?' or 'How has it been?' To answer you say È stato... 'It was...' or 'It has been ....'

  • To say how you were, you say sono stato for a man or sono stata for a woman.

  • Sono, sei, è are used with verbs indicating movement too - sono andato, sono andata, 'I've gone'

  • But with other verbs you use ho, hai, ha... followed by a word like lasciato, left, or perduto, lost. The ending doesn't change.
