How to ask how to get somewhere - a few basics

Per Bassano?
È lontano?
A circa cinquecento metri

  • The easiest way to ask how to get to a place is to start with per, 'for', followed by the name of the place.

  • See how this works

    stazione?
    piazza della Repubblica?
    porto?
    Vicenza?

  • To ask if a place is far away, all you say is È lontano? 'Is it far?'

  • You may be told the distance in kilometres or hundreds of metres. Figures in the hundreds are easy to understand and say. One hundred is cento.

  • Then, for 200-900, the words for 2-9 are followed by -cento: duecento, trecento, quattrocento, cinquecento, seicento, settecento, ottocento, novecento.
