How to ask where things are - a few basics

Scusi, dov'è il Ponte di Rialto?
Come?
Può ripetere?

  • To ask 'where is...?' you combine dove, where, and è, is.

  • See how this works

    il ponte di Rialto
    Where's the Rialto bridge?

  • To ask 'where are...?' you use the separate words for 'where' and 'are' - dove sono...?

  • You usually need to attract someone's attention to get directions. Simply say scusi. Add signora if it's a woman and signore if it's a man.

  • The instructions may not be easy to follow first-time round. You can ask Come? (lit. How?), Prego? or even Può ripetere?, 'Can you repeat that?'
