Getting there
Opening a bank account

Foreigners will need to open a bank account if they're staying in Italy for a significant period of time. However it isn't that easy. The majority of banks will only permit foreigners to open an account with them if they are in possession of a residence certificate, un certificato di residenza.

It might make life a bit easier if you were to approach an Italian bank with offices, filiali, in the UK like Banca Commerciale Italiana, Banca di Roma, or Banca San Paolo Imi. The UK office will then be able to liase with a local branch of your choice in Italy.

To open an account you'll need the following:

  • Valid passport
  • Valid residence certificate, il certificato di residenza
  • Proof of address in Italy, eg telephone or electricity bill, rental contract
  • Birth certificate
  • Proof of income, eg a tax return or contract
  • Reference from your home bank
