The two dots that appear over the vowels a, o and u, known as the umlaut, reflect a different pronunciation of the vowel.
ä can be short, like English 'e' in bed:
ä can be long, like the sound in English bear. ö has no real English equivalent.
ö can be short, sounding a bit like the sound in huh.
ö can be long, sounding a bit like the sound in her ü has no real English equivalent, sounding halfway between an English ee and a u.
ü can be short or long, the same as all other vowel sounds. |
