Time keeping Germany is an efficient country - trains generally run on time, the streets are cleaned regularly and meetings always start on time unless there is a very good reason for them not to. So there is a certain emphasis on timekeeping and die Pünktlichkeit, punctuality. It is important to bear this in mind and you may need to adapt your behaviour accordingly when visiting the country. If you are running a little late for an appointment, call ahead and explain your situation. Whilst in some other countries an arrangement to meet for dinner at 8pm means anytime up to 8.15pm or even 8.30pm, in Germany 8pm means eight, sharp. Unannounced lateness is very much frowned upon. This attention to promptness also extends to financial matters. There is little tolerance for late payment of anything, whether it's a bill, invoice or outstanding credit. Settling your accounts quickly and within agreed timeframes is highly recommended. |
