The words auf and zwischen, called prepositions, can describe a dynamic position or relationship. When they do so as in the above examples, die and das don't change but der in der Plan changes to den.

Die, the plural of der, die and das, does not change after auf.


These changes are triggered by auf and zwischen when they describe an action. They are examples of prepositions followed by the accusative case.
