auf, zwischen
+ dem, der, dem

Ich bin auf der Olympia Messe.
I am at the Olympia fair.

Zwischen Herrn Walter und mir...
 Between Mr Walter and me...

The words auf and zwischen, called prepositions, can describe a static position or relationship. When they do so note how the following words are affected: die in die Olympia Messe changes to der Olympia Messe, and Herr in Herr Walter changes to Herrn Walter.

These changes are triggered by auf and zwischen when they describe a state of affairs. They are examples of prepositions followed by the dative case.
