How to ask questions

Vous avez une table ?
Vous avez choisi ?

  • In French the easiest way to ask questions is to keep the same order for statements and questions - the only difference is the rising questioning tone in your voice.

  • You can also change the word order of a sentence to make a question, e.g. Vous avez une table ? can become Avez-vous une table ?, 'Have you got a table?'

  • Alternatively you can start the sentence with a question phrase such as 'Est-ce que... ?', literally 'Is it that...?'

  • Remember, questions in English often start with 'is', 'are' or 'do', which have no French equivalent.
